First snow of the year

Well, even thought the winter solstice is still several weeks a way I would have to say that with this first snow fall winter is officially here. With it getting such an early start what will the rest of the year bring, one is sure to wonder.

This year the persimmon seeds, from everybody I've talked to, seem to be a spoon. Which according to folk lore means that the snow will be heavy this year. According to the almanac, this year will be snowy, with alternating times of record highs and record lows with periods of heavy snow, depending on where you live in the "heartland". Specifically for December it is predicting snowy and very cold for the first half and mild the second.

Another point of interest the "Old farmers Almanac" is predicting that we may actually be going through a period cooling for the next 50 yrs.

Prop 8

I know I've said that I'm not gonna talk about politics for a while but I just thought I'd comment on this. I don't think Prop eight in Ca should have even been brought to vote, nor the one in Mo or one at the Federal level. In 50 years we'll look back at the idea to ban gay marriage the same way we look at slavery now or denying women the right to vote. We'll scratch our heads and try to remember what the big deal was about.

I mentioned in another blog that when it comes to a subject such as marriage I'm not sure the government should have an opinion at all. The marriage license is a contract used for tax purposes, custody issues, etc... The government shouldn't be able to deny any two people of legal age from signing that contract. Now churches, temples, mosques etc... can refuse to have the ceremonies all they want. That's their right. Actually I'm surprised that failed in california of all places to begin with.

Climate....

Wow it's been a long time since I've Blogged. I'm going to start this blog off with what I hope to be a series of posts concerning the climate and "Climate Change". Topics such as "What is it?" "Warming or Cooling?", "Is it man made ?" etc...

So let start with What is (insert scary music here) "Climate Change"? The Wikipedia definition of climate change is...

"...any long-term significant change in the “average weather” that a given region experiences. Average weather may include average temperature, precipitation and wind patterns. It involves changes in the variability or average state of the atmosphere over durations ranging from decades to millions of years"

The climate change that the media and Al Gore talk about non stop is "Global Climate change". The Change of the average weather around the entire world. To be more specific the most prolific idea about the climate is that we are undergoing "Man Made Global Warming",which is the idea that the average temperature in increasing around the world due to the activities of well...man. That our cars ,industries and energy production are creating an excess of pollution, especially carbon dioxide that is creating a "green house effect" trapping heat inside the earths atmosphere leading to the increase in temperature.

On the flip side of this their, are those that believe we are going into a period "Global Cooling". Where the average temperature of the planet is starting a downward trend. This climate model was first introduced in the mid to late 1960's. Though some studies are beginning to point that this model might still be viable or be a theory that should be reconsidered. Their are also some that believed that global warming and global cooling are link. That global warming could actually lead to a cooler planet or even a new ice age. Like the movie "Day after Tomorrow" the idea is that the melting of the ice caps will introduce cool freshwater into the atlantic and pacific "conveyor belt" currents . This will slow or even stop these warmth circulating currents leading to a major cool down.

So this is what the phrase "Climate Change " means. On my own personal opinion I think that its really shady to use a term like "Climate Change". It's completely ambiguous. If their is evidence to support global warning then say global warming. If not then well say so or say I don't know. One of the problems with the scientific community especially on this topic the the reluctance to say what the facts state or say that their are conflicting studies or simply say we don't know. If scientists currently had all the answers then we would really need them now would we. The point of science is to learn, investigate and understand in an objective way.
